How to play

  1. Match the view. A number counts open squares up, down, left and right, stopping at a shaded square or the edge. Count the numbered square itself once. The view does not turn corners. Other numbered squares do not block it.
  2. Keep shade apart. Shaded squares cannot touch edge-to-edge. Diagonal touching is allowed. Numbered squares always stay white.
  3. Keep the open area connected. Every unshaded square must connect to every other through side-to-side steps. The connecting path may turn corners, but cannot step diagonally.
  4. Choose a mode, then tap. Shade makes a square dark. White adds a dot as a reminder to keep it open. Clear removes either mark. Tap a square to apply the selected mode. Tapping that same square again in the same mode makes no further change. Shade replaces a white dot; White replaces shade. Use Clear or Undo to remove a mark. No long-press is needed.

In this one-row illustration, also imagine a shaded square immediately above the 3 and one immediately below it. The 3 then sees exactly 3: left + itself + right.

White dots are optional. Clear squares count as open too. You win as soon as the current shade placement satisfies all three rules. An underlined number has a matching view count. A matching number does not prove nearby choices are correct.

Keyboard: Tab into the board, arrows to move, Enter or Space to apply the selected mode. S shades, W marks white, C / Delete / Backspace clears. Home and End move within a row. Numbered squares can receive focus for their count description, but cannot change.

The last 128 edits are kept for Undo. Restart clears this attempt but retains previous completion and your best result. Best counts all changed marks and Undo in a completed attempt. There is no timer.

Current completion is checked after every change. “Completed before” is separate history, not a claim that the current board is solved.

Range retains its separate IndexedDB database and exact original 24 puzzle IDs. Other games’ progress is never read, changed or migrated. Saving failures are visible. Tab-only play never reconnects or copies temporary progress back. Refresh/close can lose pending edits; browser warnings and crash durability are not guaranteed.
